Tympanostomy tubes and antibiotic prophylaxis were significantly superior to placebo in a clinical trial conducted by Dr. Casselbrant, our SMED Medical Director, Dr. Bluestone, SMED’s Founder, along with co-authors and colleagues, in 1992.
That is why he disagrees with statement six in AAO-HNS guidelines that states, “Clinicians should not perform tympanostomy tube insertion in children with recurrent acute otitis media who do not have middle ear effusion in either ear…”
